EOTO 3 Reax

All my classmates chose a person who has made a huge impact in the media field. These presentations helped me gather an analysis of the different experiences of Journalists. Each classmate took the time to present a biography and provide detailed information.

One of my classmates dove into the life of Bob Woodward. He was born on March 26th, 1943, and graduated from Yale. He then pursued a career in the Navy. Bob Woodward is known for his production of the book The Agenda.

This book dives further into Bill Clinton's election and provides interviews with administrative insiders. He influences the world with his ability to succeed in the political field. He wrote many books, including Bush Years, Obama Years, and Trump Years. He is a bestselling author and Pulitzer Prize winner. He continues to report to this day.

My other classmate covered a biography of Ted Turner. He founded CNN in 1980. As technology evolved so did the ways of reporting. In 1976 he worked with CNN on satellite distribution.

With the success of CNN, CNN 2 headline news took air. Some of his other successes include Moneyline (1980), Evans and Novak (1980), Crossfire (1982), and Larry King Live (1985). Ted Turner is also known as an environmentalist.

Someone else covered Howard Coswell and specifically presented how he was a loved and hated man. He was born on March 25th, 1918 in Winston-Salem. However, he grew up and spent most of his life in Brooklyn.

He has a law degree from NYU and also was the host of a radio show. He then transitioned into broadcasting for sports in 1958. He is known for supporting Muhammed  Ali, John Carlos, and Tommy Smith. He is known for his anchor position on Monday Night football. His career started to decline in 1982 when he stopped boxing commentating. He was placed in the Television Academy Hall Of Fame.

Bernard Shaw was also someone that my classmate covered for a presentation. Early into his career he joined the high school newspaper and did school announcements.

In 1959 he joined the Marine Corps, and then in 1964, he enrolled at the University of Illinois. While at the University of Illinois, he worked as a radio news reporter and TV news writer.

In 1971 he started reporting for CBS. As his career started to take off he started anchoring for CNN in 1980 and then moderated the presidential debate in 1988. In 1989 he covered the Tiananmen Square protest. He retired in 2001 with plenty of success and rewards.

Martha Gellhorn was born on November 8th, 1908 in St. Louis Missouri. She attended Byrn Mawr College. As she stepped further into her journalism career, she landed her first job with The New Republic which was a progressive political magazine. She also wrote for the Albany Times Newspaper.

She lived during the great depression and as this was taking place she took her typewriter and booked it to New York. This was the most popular destination for Journalism at the time. She then secured a job with the New York Times bureau office.

She also covered the United Press during the First World War. She also did some work with Vogue. As the Spanish Civil War was taking place she covered the bombings of Barcelona and soldiers' stories about life in the trenches.

My classmates gathered important information on all of these successful Journalists and were able to present it to the class. These presentations allowed me to further develop my knowledge of History, and important Journalists before I was born.

Shock And Awe reflection

The movie Shock and Awe is based on President George Bush's illegal invasion of Iraq and the consequences it caused. The press Knight Ridder was looking to expose Bush's illegal action through gathering sources.

However other more popular newsrooms were looking to defend Bush and relayed untrue information. Knight Ridder had an accurate depiction of the situation but was overlooked.

The actions shown in the newsroom show how committed Knight Ridder was to relaying the truth to the public eye. Knight Ridder's focus wasn't on making the most money, its main focus was gathering the proper sources that would allow them to stop the invasion of the Iraq war.

Other news stations' focus was on making the most money and receiving the most amount of views. The conflict that was presented between the press and the government was uncanny.

Bush lied to be able to invade Iraq, and Knight-Ridder was looking to expose the truth. However, the other news station published a story on Bush but left out the fact that he was lying about Iraq holding Nuclear weapons.

This was where conflict was raised in Knight Ridder because they had the information but knew that if they published the story no one would read it because the other news station was more popular.

The conflict between Knight Ridder and other Journalists was because other Journalists agreed with Bush's justification for war but never did enough research to back it up.

Knight Ridder while being the news station willing to go against the president and show the truth, didn't have enough viewers to gain enough publicity for exposure.

The most important scene throughout the movie is when the boss of Knight Ridder enters the other Journalists' office and confronts them about the story and how it left out the source of Bush's lying about weapons. The other news station then continued to bash Knight Ridder's boss saying the reason the other news station was more popular was because they presented the best stories.

This interaction shows the bad side of the media and untruthful journalism. Once the soldiers were sent to invade Iraq, we saw that Knight-Ridder had the proper covering of the story and that Bush was lying.

This movie shows the lesson of not putting leaders in place who crave war. This invasion was highly unnecessary and if the media covered it properly it would have been exposed for what it was.

Another lesson we see from this movie is influencing media to inform the public of truthful news. It also influences us to check our sources no matter what before believing something we are told right away.

This movie ties together the importance of truthful Journalism, and the actions we need to take to gather information before reporting it.

Future journalists need to be aware of what they are informing the public of because they are who the public pays attention to for information. The ending of Shock and Awe is proof that truthful journalism, and electing truthful leaders will allow our society to succeed as a healthier nation.

Good night, and good luck movie reax

The film Goodnight and Good Luck focuses on the conflict between a journalist and a senator. The Journalist dedicates his time to exposing the injustice being committed by the Senate through a senate investigation. This film is a history lesson to us about political power and the control it can have on the public eye. Throughout this film, many lessons occur. For example, Journalist Murrow gives a speech in the movie reminding the public of the TV's accountability to educate the public on important figures' intentions. Senator McCarthy was one of the most controversial senators in American history and Murrow dedicated his time to exposing the truth about him.

Murrow was willing to take the risk and cover every angle of news because journalists were getting too comfortable only covering good news. This also shows how Journalists are often swayed by biases because of fear of government power and money. For example, the journalists were debating on whether or not to run the story because of government contracts. They decided to run the piece to show the "infringement of civil liberties."

Throughout the movie, a woman goes to trial for being accused of communist ties with very little evidence. McCarthy the senator trials her as guilty knowing the very little evidence presented throughout the trial. Murrow the Journalist exposes him for an unfair trial. Murrow brings McCarthy on his show to give him a chance to defend himself, and McCarthy uses it to accuse Murrow of ties to communism. The Senate then filed an investigation on McCarthy.

Joe and Shirley work in for the same journalism company as Murrow and are secretly married. This is against company policy because two employees aren't allowed to be together. This is a lesson in Journalism because journalists are responsible for presenting the least amount of bias possible. Bill is another character apart of the same company as Murrow and he holds a higher position than Murrow. Bill attempts to censor Murrow and then proceeds to fire him.

Murrow being told he only has 5 more shows left with this Journalism company, leads him to stand his ground. Murrow concludes his career by giving a speech on how Journalists are supposed to cover all the issues in the real world. He ends his speech with the quote "Good night and good luck."

Murrow's speech holds significance to the lesson of this film. The government and people of power censor the public, and its a journalist's job to present all sides of the story. Murrow wasn't happy with how Journalists were being censored, and the public not being aware. He uses what power he holds to influence the people and open their eyes to the ways of the world. His speech allows the people to see that censorship is a very real issue. Senator McCarthy feared Murrow and his dedication to expressing the wrongdoing in Journalism. Out of fear, he claimed Murrow to be a communist because he didn't want the controversy to form in the people. McCarthy could see that Murrow was relentless when it came to expressing all the truth in Journalism. McCarthy did not want Murrow to expose all the bad sides of the world, and McCarthy himself.

EOTO Reax 2

Presentations took place on Thursday 3/14/24, my classmates through further research gathered information regarding different styles and types of Journalism. Specific periods of time allowed for different areas in the reporting field to thrive. These presentations developed research on the growth and history behind Journalism.

Crime Reporting relies on local and national information released to the public. Crime reporters rush to the scene because they want to gather the most information and a lot of the time compete with other reporters for the best story. During the prohibition criminals and gangsters ruled the cities, this was why crime reporting was popular during this time period. When alcohol was banned crime reached its peak. The 1920s was a time when investigative reporting and crime reporting skyrocketed.

Breaking news was another area of reporting where at the scene Journalists would take notes on a pad, and release the story to the public as soon as possible. Reporters would gather the facts about the crime scene and release the story to the public. Jake Lingle was a crime reporter in the 1920's, who thrived in investigative reporting. He was then murdered in broad daylight, and other journalists feared they would be murdered as well. Later it was exposed that Lingle would copy other journalists' facts and create his own story. There is a theory that Lingle who was friends with Al Capone, was killed by Capone. However, this is just a theory.

The 1920s were also a time when sports reporting was at its peak. It was considered the golden age of sports, women participated in the Big Six, and men participated in much more. In 1921 the first live broadcasting of a sporting event took place. It was a boxing match with 400,000 listeners, and this transformed modern radio.

Sports reporting transformed the nation through TV, Photojournalism, and radio. In 1939 Sports broadcasting made its first appearance on TV during the baseball game of Columbia vs. Princeton. Photojournalism was created to connect the news through photographs. It is very popular in news stories, and usually contains still images, but could also be presented through video in broadcast journalism. It was created in 1848 and was seen as the Golden Age of photojournalism, containing images that tell stories. Some of the most important people in this field of work were W. Eugene Smith, Robert Capa, and Roger Fenton. These images provide insight and help us understand stories to a better degree. This helped create Multimedia journalism.

The Gossip and Tabloids was an era of Journalism that revolved around the drama. The first Gossiper was James Boswell who wrote 70 columns as a Hypocondriack in the 1780's. He worked for the London magazine and conveyed stories not about people but stories around town. These stories revolved around political conferences, and these columnists were anonymous. The accessibility of this gossip was through print, and every local paper held a copy. Causing libel laws to become loose in England. One of the most famous Gossip and Tabloids story was The Trio. This story conveyed the infamous affair between Eddie Fisher, Debbie Reynolds, and Elizabeth Taylor. The affair was between Eddie and Elizabeth. The Tabloids named Elizabeth Taylor "evil", and saw Debbie Reynolds as a "good girl." No disrespect was shown to Eddie Fisher even though he was involved as well. All throughout history, the tabloids targeted women as evil whenever scandals occurred. This is something that still happens today, for example, Ariana Grande and the scandal with Ethan Slater. Gossip Columns are something that is seen in today's paper as well. It is typically found in magazines and surrounds the topic of politicians. It is shown through digital media and print media.

Music Journalism was developed in the 20th century, during the 1920's and late 70's. New music genres formed including; Jazz, Rock, and Pop. Music Journalists started to create stories about the new release of music and different genres being introduced. Rock was a genre that most Journalists wanted to cover because it was a controversial topic. Journalists started to compete to write about different sub genre's and niches to write about. One of the most famous Music Journalists was Paul William who thrived in 1966 creating the Rock newspaper Crawdaddy. He helped pave the way for other rock journalists like Ellen Wills, and Ellen Sander. When the Beatles became popular rock journalism started to thrive. It was known as a pop culture phenomenon.

Different periods and approaches are shown to cover different stories. It also depends on what the audience is looking for in a story depending on what aspects of life are considered interesting at the time. My classmates through further research discovered that history expresses different forms, and angles to journalism.

The Front Page Reflection

The movie The Front Page covers a group of Journalists whose main objective is to make money by covering the most business strategy stories. Even if it means disregarding morals that they have set in place for themselves as human beings.

This movie takes place in 1929 when a journalist who was about to move discovers a criminal who is being searched for by police. He then hides him from other journalists, and business outlets so that he can cover the story and make the most money.

The Front Page important characters

Even though something this outrageous wouldn't happen in today's decade of journalists because they would go to jail for life. It isn't completely outdated and old timely because journalism is still corrupt.

Journalism outlets claim to be unbiased and mainly focus on the people. But they really focus on how to make the most money, even if they have to disregard moral values.

Even though this movie takes place in 1929 the type of Journalism this movie is based on is in 1904 when the Hearst L.A Examiner covered investigative journalism.

Hearst was known for using images and bold headlines to real in his audience. The Front Page uses similar tactics to cover investigative journalism. In the movie, the Journalism outlet is willing to hide a criminal to gain the best coverage for their story. This is a bold move and was the main idea behind this movie.

The producer of The Front Page

In this movie, the Sheriff and the Journalism outlet are hostile towards one another. The sheriff is situationally aware and knows that the journalists will do anything to produce a story that will make money.

When the outlet is hiding the criminal the sheriff suspects that they are involved in the reason for his disappearance.

Journalists and police today are less hostile towards one another depending on the situation. Sometimes situations occur where they are more hostile. However, a lot of the time journalists and police are on the same side. Sometimes when Journalists are pushy, towards celebrities and harass them, police and journalists are then hostile towards one another.

The Front Page Advertisement

The reporters and the mayor's relationship contained coverage, similar to the media and politicians today. The news and the media only cover certain areas and sway politicians, and the people how they want.

Journalists and positions of power act similarly today because they use corruption, and money to cover what they don't want you to know. They use biases and personal gain to continue their selfish endeavors.

The press and politicians collaborate with one another to sway biases based off of political parties.

This is why political parties should not exist. If you are a democrat then the democratic news only covers a biased take of democratic news. And if you are republican the republican news only covers the biased areas of republican news.

The press uses negative coverage of politicians to sway the politics of the world to vote for a certain political party. This is why Journalists should not be a part of a political party because they are biased when they are. Politicians also use money and power to sway the press away from covering their negatives and only showing their positive side.

Authority, power, and money are the reason politics and the press are so corrupt. The system is flawed, and collaboration is used to cover certain areas of our world. Similar to when the news outlet The Front Page used collaboration to hide a criminal for personal gain.

Molly and Peggy are the female characters in The Front Page, and this shows women's suffrage. The women in this movie are treated as if they aren't human because of their gender. This is something that has improved today but still takes place.

EOTO1 Key Post

William Randolph Hearst was born on April 29, 1863. George Hearst was his father, who owned a mine. He also owned the San Francisco Examiner. Hearst asked his father in 1887 if he could take over this paper; that was how the Hearst empire began. He continued to excel in the Journalism realm by changing the way Journalists create stories. Hearst took a more marketing standpoint when it came to the approach of his newspaper outlet. He made his stories stand out by using a more flashy and sensational approach, this captured the attention of his audience and changed the journalism game. Once the San Francisco Examiners' viewers started to skyrocket, Hearst also decided to buy the New York Morning Journal. Hearst being an exceptional businessman, and Journalist was willing to spend the money he knew he had towards the New York Morning Journal. The approach Hearst took was well thought out and calculated. After gathering a successful reputation through exploring the San Francisco Examiner, Hearst decided the best way to gain readers of the New York Morning Journal was to hire known successful writers.

Although the success of the San Francisco Examiner, and New York Morning Journal was an amazing business accomplishment, Hearst impacted the whole idea and basis behind Journalism with his approach. He created the term yellow journalism, which boldly produced information. He used exaggerated language to create excitement, and his paper mostly covered investigative journalism. Hearst using his wealth, business, and journalism skills continued to build an empire. His passion for business and journalism drove him to continue to purchase and produce news. As technology expanded and grew he started to produce comic strips, through striking photographs and illustrations. He also was the first print media writer and producer to enter the radio broadcasting world. He was an influential man and was able to get people to listen to him.

Joseph Pulitzer and W.R. Hearst were coworkers in the 1890's. They caught the public eye by using romance, melodrama, and hyperbole to engage the audience in their newspapers. They both used the Spanish-American War to sell newspapers, by engaging the audience in what the war situation was. Hearst also developed news schemes that instigated this war. He wrote a story covering the imprisonment and release of Cuban prisoner Evangeline Cisneros.
In the 1920 Hearst entered the movie newsreels business area through his company Hearst Metrotone News. Through this business, he created and produced over 100 films. He used his advertising and marketing talent to produce films that captured the audience's attention. Every dream Hearst followed was very calculated and well thought out. He was more focused on grabbing the audience's attention and he didn't care what type of attention it was. For Hearst publicity was publicity, and he wanted to get his name out there to make more money. His journalism approach has left a massive mark on the development of journalism today. The most impressive part of Hearst's life was how he used his marketing skills to get his name out there to get more readers. He was able to build relationships with his co-workers to publish his perspective. He held high standards for himself throughout his life, and he did for his co-workers as well. This is shown in the way his success as a journalist carried from one newspaper to another. Therefore creating the Hearst news empire.
