William Randolph Hearst was born on April 29, 1863. George Hearst was his father, who owned a mine. He also owned the San Francisco Examiner. Hearst asked his father in 1887 if he could take over this paper; that was how the Hearst empire began. He continued to excel in the Journalism realm by changing the way Journalists create stories. Hearst took a more marketing standpoint when it came to the approach of his newspaper outlet. He made his stories stand out by using a more flashy and sensational approach, this captured the attention of his audience and changed the journalism game. Once the San Francisco Examiners' viewers started to skyrocket, Hearst also decided to buy the New York Morning Journal. Hearst being an exceptional businessman, and Journalist was willing to spend the money he knew he had towards the New York Morning Journal. The approach Hearst took was well thought out and calculated. After gathering a successful reputation through exploring the San Francisco Examiner, Hearst decided the best way to gain readers of the New York Morning Journal was to hire known successful writers.
Although the success of the San Francisco Examiner, and New York Morning Journal was an amazing business accomplishment, Hearst impacted the whole idea and basis behind Journalism with his approach. He created the term yellow journalism, which boldly produced information. He used exaggerated language to create excitement, and his paper mostly covered investigative journalism. Hearst using his wealth, business, and journalism skills continued to build an empire. His passion for business and journalism drove him to continue to purchase and produce news. As technology expanded and grew he started to produce comic strips, through striking photographs and illustrations. Joseph Pulitzer and W.R. Hearst were coworkers in the 1890's. They caught the public eye by using romance, melodrama, and hyperbole to engage the audience in their newspapers. They both used the Spanish-American War to sell newspapers, by engaging the audience in what the war situation was. Hearst also developed news schemes that instigated this war. He wrote a story covering the imprisonment and release of Cuban prisoner Evangeline Cisneros.
In the 1920 Hearst entered the movie newsreels business area through his company Hearst Metrotone News. Through this business, he created and produced over 100 films. He used his advertising and marketing talent to produce films that captured the audience's attention. Every dream Hearst followed was very calculated and well thought out. He was more focused on grabbing the audience's attention and he didn't care what type of attention it was. For Hearst publicity was publicity, and he wanted to get his name out there to make more money. His journalism approach has left a massive mark on the development of journalism today. The most impressive part of Hearst's life was how he used his marketing skills to get his name out there to get more readers. He was able to build relationships with his co-workers to publish his perspective. He held high standards for himself throughout his life, and he did for his co-workers as well. This is shown in the way his success as a journalist carried from one newspaper to another. Therefore creating the Hearst news empire.
